Even for Philadelphia, Poplar has a ton of historic landmarks; the Divine Lorraine Hotel, the Spring Garden Schools, and the Thaddeus Stevens School of Observation are all on the National Register of Historic Places, along with about a half-dozen other nearby structures. An ideal neighborhood for those who like the big city life but want to stay out of the hustle and bustle, Poplar began as an industrial hub before shifting to a residential area. Today, Poplar’s streets are mostly occupied by families. Its roots as a working-class neighborhood are apparent, though gentrification has been reshaping the culture of the area over the past few years.
