Watching films at a movie theater is a luxury that up until recently, wasn’t an option for the six Angulo brothers. For them, watching movies inside their tiny NYC apartment wasn’t just their only option, it was their escape vehicle.
That’s because their father, Oscar Angulo, refused to let go of the only key to his family’s cramped Lower East Side apartment. Homeschooled by their mother and only allowed to step outside a few times each year if they were lucky, the Angulo brothers were locked away from society since birth.
It wasn’t until 2010 when the brothers escaped to explore NYC alone. As fate would have it, director Crystal Moselle saw the sextet on the street and struck up a conversation.
The brothers shared their childhood memories, many of which included memorizing every line in classics like The Godfather, making costumes, building props, and filming themselves reenacting scenes from The Dark Knight to battle their loneliness.
Five years and many visits from Crystal later, The Wolfpack was born. And with it, came the brothers’ ticket to freedom.
