How Many Skittles Fit In A MakeSpace Bin? Hint: It’s A LOT

We can only gaze at rainbows from afar for so long. So we took the logical next step — capturing ROYGBIV and extracting its nectar.

The result: Skittles scattered everywhere.

Luckily, our bins are basically giant bowls. We scooped up the Skittles and asked you (on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook) to guess how many of these chewy fruit explosions squeeze into a MakeSpace bin for a shot at scoring $25 of MakeSpace credit.

The contest has concluded. Our rigorous calculations are complete. The total is …

81,149 Skittles fit inside a single MakeSpace bin.

Congratulations to Instagram user @alissazulvergold (she guessed 80,000), Twitter user @bobby (he guessed 62,001), and Facebook user Marcin K. (he guessed 148,200) on guessing closest to the answer!

As for us, it’s beast mode time.

A Free Charlie Brown Christmas Tree For Your Tiny Apartment

As you’re packing up your MakeSpace bin, pouring yourself a glass of eggnog, and pulling up Lil Bub’s Magical Yule Log YouTube video, you could also be basking in the glory of your very own tiny, 24-inch, sparsely-needled Charlie Brown Christmas Tree (complete with a lone red ornament and of course, Linus’ shepherd-hat-doubling blue blanket).

It’s widely known that the Charlie Brown tree is the perfect tree for maximizing both free space and holiday cheer.

All you need to do is schedule a MakeSpace appointment for this Saturday, December 13th, and this puny pine is all yours (for free).* Now gather your Peanuts, set “the proper mood,” and schedule your MakeSpace pickup.

*Limit of one Charlie Brown Christmas Tree per appointment. Some love and assembly required. Only available in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.

You’re Getting A Bike Tune-up Discount From Ride Brooklyn

So, your bike has been sleeping soundly in MakeSpace all winter. And this coming spring, once your bike comes out of hibernation, it’s going to need a nice long stretch, err, tune-up.

That’s why we’re teaming up with our friends at Ride Brooklyn to give all the bikes who’ve been living with us all winter long a discount for a bike tune-up!

Basically, when your bike comes home, we’ll send along a Ride Brooklyn coupon for $20 off a tune-up for geared bikes, or $10 off a tune-up for single speed bikes. All you have to do is make an appointment with Ride Brooklyn by calling their Williamsburg or Park Slope location. Then, bring your bike and coupon to your appointment and you’re all set.

Ride Brooklyn tune-ups include:

  • Adjusting both brakes
  • Adjusting both gears
  • Trueing (straightening) both wheels
  • Lubing your bike’s drivetrain and cables
  • Cleaning and checking your bike’s safety so you can ride with confidence next spring*

We gave your bike shelter this winter, now give it some love.

*Offer will only be valid between March 1 and May 15, 2015.

MakeSpace For Free Turkey

We’re stuffed to the brim with gratitude. Our national expansion and growing team are just some of the things we’re incredibly thankful for this year. But none of this would be possible without the awesome people who’ve supported us every step of the way (hint: that’s you).

What better way to give thanks than with food? Which is why we’re giving anyone with a MakeSpace appointment (for our local service in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens) on November 25th a free 10-pound frozen turkey from our friends at FreshDirect.

It’s our way of saying thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving!

MakeSpace Will Continue Offering Free Goodwill Donation Pickups In NYC

Consensus is overwhelming. You love do-gooding, and so do we. Our partnership with Goodwill was supposed to end last week, but you spoke and we listened. We’re excited to announce that we’ll continue offering free Goodwill pickups to MakeSpace customers in NYC through the end of 2014.

When our Upload Team drops off your empty bins, they’ll also provide you with a beautiful Goodwill bag. While you’re loading up your bins, just toss anything you’d like to donate in the big blue bag. Hand it off to the Upload Team when they come to pick up your stuff, and we’ll take care of the rest!

Two Birds. One Stone.
A Better World. A Bigger Home.

Please note: Because the Upload Team is on a tight schedule, we won’t be able to provide a tax receipt for donations. Clothing we transport to Goodwill will NOT become MakeSpace’s own donation. It will always be your donation, we’re just happy we could help make it happen. Available through December 31, 2014. One donation bag per customer.

Patrick Janelle’s NYC Summer Essentials

Patrick Janelle's Summer Essentials

We’ve been obsessed with Patrick Janelle’s Instagram this summer. Burgers. Parks. Skylines. Cappucinos. Staycations. Vacations. He’s pretty much the quintessential New York Instagrammer.

So naturally, when he signed up for MakeSpace, we knew we had to make something happen. With a shared love of burgers and parks, we decided to have Patrick curate a bin of his New York City Summer Park Essentials. Here’s what he chose:

  1. No park day can get off to the right start without the right bag. That’s why Patrick always takes his Birdkage Monterey Market Tote. If there’s more stuff than one bag can handle, he’ll bring along a tote from Scotch and Soda.

  2. For footwear, Patrick rocks a pair of summery slip-ons from Soludos, which perfectly capture the laid-back attitude of west-coast surf culture.

  3. Every park outing needs the right soundtrack. That’s why Patrick always brings along the Jawbone Mini Jambox. The sleek bluetooth speaker is light, portable, and sounds great.
  4. For reading material, Patrick brings along a copy of the latest New Yorker Magazine and his favorite summer read, Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter.

  5. His shades of choice are TOMS Bellini Sunglasses.

  6. This summer has been fairly mild by NYC standards, but that doesn’t mean you can forget about sunscreen. Patrick’s favorite is Biotherm. “It’s the best. It smells awesome,” he told us.

  7. Finally, having a perfect day in the park is all about having the perfect snacks. That’s why Patrick always hits up Shake Shack for burgers, fries, and shakes when he’s around Madison Square Park.

Inspired by Patrick’s picks, we decided to partner with our friends at Shake Shack to give MakeSpacers park kits of their own. This Summer Friday, MakeSpace customers will receive a ton of awesome swag (can you say burger frisbee?) and a gift card to get some meaty Shake Shack deliciousness!

Schedule now, because appointments fill up fast!

Introducing Summer Fridays At MakeSpace

More time slots. More tasty snacks.

There’s nothing better than a Summer Friday. Who doesn’t love leaving work early, taking a long lunch, and maybe even catching up on some life maintenance before the weekend really kicks off?

To celebrate these ephemeral days of summer, we’re rolling out Friday MakeSpace appointments.

And to make a good thing even better, we’re working with some awesome brands to plan exciting giveaways every Friday from now until the end of August.

As you can see, we’ve got tons of artisanal pickles and beer to give away, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Follow us on Twitter to stay in the loop about what we’ve got cooking.

Be sure to book your Friday MakeSpace appointment now, because these time slots are filling up fast!

Do-gooding Just Got Easier. Goodwill + MakeSpace.

We’ve partnered with our friends at Goodwill to make do-gooding even easier! The next time you get MakeSpace bins dropped off in New York, Chicago, or the greater Washington, DC area, you’ll notice a blue Goodwill + MakeSpace bag tagging along.

While you’re loading up your bins, just chuck anything you’d like to donate in the blue bag, and hand it off to the Upload Team when they come back for your bin pickup. We’ll take care of the rest!

Two birds. One stone. A better world. A bigger home. Schedule your pick up today!

Please note: Because the Upload Team is on a tight schedule, we aren’t be able to provide tax receipts for donations. That said, items that we transport to Goodwill will NOT become MakeSpace’s own donation. It will always be your donation, we’re just happy we could help make it happen! Available through September 2015. Limit one donation bag per customer.

Nothing Says Freedom Like Free Beer

Nothing’s better than grilling on a rooftop, drinking beers with friends, and enjoying the fireworks over the East River (Brooklyn and Queens represent).

If you’re hosting 4th of July festivities this year, make sure to clear a dance floor with MakeSpace.

And because we want this to be the best Independence Day you’ve ever had, we’ve partnered with our friends at Pabst Blue Ribbon to bring two cases of PBR (and some sparklers!) to anyone with a MakeSpace pickup or delivery scheduled on Thursday, July 3rd.

Schedule now because we’ve been booking up fast!

If you aren’t a beer lover (or if you’re not yet of legal drinking age), just let us know, we’ll keep you hydrated with some coconut water courtesy of our friends at ZICO.
